His current research work is focused on nanophotonic devices and instrumentation, including fiber-optic integrated biomolecule sensing and acoustic detection, light-matter interactions at the nanoscale and single molecule Raman scattering, and low power consumption and small footprint information processing. In his past work, he has successfully demonstrated several types of semiconductor quantum material micro/nano lasers including quantum dot nanolasers and edge-emitting photonic crystal lasers, established several theories and models for surface plasmon propagation, coupling and focusing, achieved ultrahigh SERS enhancement with high reproducibility for single hotspots and observation of single and few molecule chemical events and the nonlinear SERS phenomenon, and created fiber end-facet integrated SPR micro sensors for sensitive biomolecule detection and ultrasound detection.
