The Center of Optics and Optoelectronics (COO) is established at the UM-SJTU Joint Institute on May 4, 2012. It consists of a group of electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, physicists and material scientists. The faculty's research spans the areas of biomedical technology, energy, information, and material science. The Center is also established as part of an effort to bridge the gap between fundamental science and system engineering, and as an impetus to strengthen engineering education in fundamental and interdisciplinary fields. It aims at preparing students to become truly leaders in a fast growing science and technology world, and in face of intense global competition. Students have the opportunity to take a wide range of courses at the interface of electrical engineering, physics, material science and optical engineering.
